Introduction to drawing analysis:

‘Drawing is the probity of art. To draw does not mean simply to reproduce contours; drawing does not consist merely of line: drawing is also expression, the inner form, the plane, the modeling. See what remains after that.’ By Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingre

Humans have a limited capacity to store information. This limited capacity of memory can be can be resolved by transferring memory to external display that can be analyzed. One such tool for this is drawing.

What is drawing? Drawings are a kind of visual and external representation of our thoughts. Drawing has been characterized as a dialogue between the individual and the drawing, the analysis of which can reveal a lot about one’s subconscious mind. Self generated designs are seen as mental-image of the drawer, from which meanings and new insights are gained. So, the process of drawing is seen as an exploration of the self.

Drawing is valued by therapist, because it give assess to thinking that is close to our subconscious. The drawings or the doodling that we make express a lot about our personality. From a stroke of line to a figure of a person ,all can provide a personality profile. When we draw, we are guided by our subconscious mind, where our thoughts and emotions are stored. So whatever is in our mind, gets displayed on the page. It’s a like a map to our repressed and stored thoughts and emotions.

Studied with handwriting analysis it can confirm personality profile findings or reveal things that handwriting analysis cannot. For example, the House-Person-Tree test (HTP), developed by John Buck, is common practice in child psychology today.  It is used to gain an understanding of a child’s mental and emotional state. Apart form children, it can be used for adults upto the age of 70.
